Elaine Ruth Vehlow found eternal peace on Saturday, August 10, 2024 with her loving family at her side. Elaine Hunger was born on April 29, 1925 in Wausau to Arno and Norma Hunger. She attended Lincoln Elementary School, Wausau Junior High School and Wausau Senior High School, where her beautiful voice was a welcome addition to the choir.
Elaine was employed as a secretary for H.C. Philips Company of Wausau. She worked there until 1947 when she married John Carl Vehlow, Sr. and they began their family. She was passionate about being a wife and mother.
She was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ and later Wausau Bible Church where she was employed as a secretary. As the church pianist, she was able to display her love of music.
Elaine was an avid reader and enjoyed needlework, crossword and jigsaw puzzles. She had a warm and wonderful smile, as well as sweet blue eyes which frequently expressed her compassion for others. She often caught people off guard with her playful little jokes.
She is survived by her children Diane Anderson, Susan (Bo) Aaron, and John Carl Jr. (Marion) Vehlow; grandchildren Nichole (Michael) Miller, Matthew (Destinie) Vehlow, Andrew (Emily) Vehlow, Brenden (Elizabeth) Vehlow, and Nathan (Xong) Vehlow; two great-grandchildren Linnaea Miller, Charlotte Vehlow and Jeydon; two sisters—in-law Mary Ellen Strecker and Jean Kluetz. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Elaine is preceded in death by her husband, daughter Elizabeth Vehlow, parents, “second mother” Lillian Morey, sister Jeanne Hunger, and brother John “Jack” Hunger.
Elaine’s memorial service will be held on Friday, August 23 at Wausau Bible Church, 1300 Grand Ave., at 1 pm with a visitation at 12:30-1 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Elaine’s name may be made to the Humane Society of Marathon County (catsndogs.org). Brainard Funeral Home-Wausau is assisting Elaine's family.
Her family would like to extend our gratitude to the wonderful staff at Mount View Care Center, where Elaine lived for the last 8 years. They have given her excellent care and many becoming her special friends.
We will miss her tremendously, but will always feel her in our hearts.
