Harvey Mathwick

Harvey, 90, of Willard, passed away on June 27, 2017 at Ministry Saint Joseph's Hospital, Marshfield. The son of Elvin and Amy (Johnson) Mathwick, Harvey was born in Wausau on May 14, 1927. Harvey worked for the U. S. Postal Service for 42 years, starting as a part-time letter carrier, he rose to management and became the director of customer service. Harvey was the area Vice President of the National Association of Postal Supervisors- serving Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. He was a member for 5 years on the National Postal Executive Board of Washington DC. After he retired from the postal service, Harvey worked for and retired from Shopko in Eau Claire after 21 years, where he ran the lawn and garden center. Among his accomplishments, Harvey was the Town of Rib Mountain Clerk for 22 years; was elected 3 terms on the Rib Mountain School Board; was a member of the Lions Club, Elks Club, and American Legion; and was a member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church. Harvey was involved in scouting for youth and adults for 30 years and was a scout master for 15 years and serving on the Samoset executive board for 7 years. He received the highest adult scouting award- the Silver Beaver. Harvey was an active member of the Rib Mountain Little League for a number of years. Harvey is a Navy veteran of WWII and served in the South Pacific aboard an aircraft carrier. He is also a Korean War veteran, serving aboard an attack transport in the Korean Theater. Harvey was an avid hunter of both small and big game. One of his greatest memories was of when he hunted big game on an African safari in Zululand, South Africa in 2010. Harvey is survived by his son, Randy Mathwick of Willard, WI and daughter, Kay (Jamie) Beck of Devils Lake, ND; and grandchildren, Christian, Matthew, Madison, and Cameron Beck of Devils Lake, ND. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ethel; sons, Ronald and Robert; brother, LeRoy; and half-brothers, Robert and Wayne Garbisch. Visitation will be held Friday, June 30 from 5pm-7pm at Brainard Funeral Home, 522 Adams Street, Wausau. A funeral will be held Saturday, July 1, 2017 at 11:00am, with a visitation at 10am until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery. The family would like to especially thank friends Rick and Marcia Ziegler for the care and support.
