Joan Stueber

June 19, 1927 — May 31, 2017

Joan Stueber, 89, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 31, 2017, after a well lived life of family, activities and contributions to the community. Joan was born on June 19, 1927, in Elizabeth, New Jersey to Robert and Marie Peterson. She graduated from Westfield High School in New Jersey, moved to Wisconsin with her family in 1945, and received an English degree from the University of Wisconsin - Madison in 1948. While there, she met George Stueber Jr., a lifelong Wausau resident. They married in 1949 and raised three children. She was an active volunteer in her children's activities, politics, church, and at Wausau Hospital. Skiing was her passion, which she pursued with her ski buddies locally and throughout the Western United States; a love she inspired in her children and grandchildren. Joan enjoyed her crossword puzzles, needlework, knitting, and the strategy of bridge. She also treasured her time spent with family at Clear Lake in Tomahawk. Joan was a social person and had a wide network of friends. You could always hear her voice and laughter above the chatter at a party. Her memory, wry sense of humor, and enthusiasm was appreciated by all and will be sorely missed. She is survived by her three children: David, of Vail, CO; Patty and her partner, George Hirsch, of Wausau; and Barbara of Plymouth, MN. She deeply adored her five grandchildren: Ross Mytton and his wife Gabriela Bhaskar of New York; Graham Mytton, California; Curt Carnahan, Colorado; Grant Carnahan, Minnesota; and Dylan Stueber, Colorado. She provided them with a love of learning, gave constant encouragement, and supported their many adventures. For that, the family is eternally grateful. Joan was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, George Stueber Jr. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 5, 2017, at First Presbyterian Church, 406 Grant Street, Wausau. The Rev. Joy Nelson-Jeffers will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Burial at Restlawn Memorial Park to follow. The family wants to thank Primrose Retirement Community for all their care and support. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Wausau or the Marathon County Humane Society.
