Peggie Mallery

June 28, 1947 — September 18, 2017

Peggie P. Mallery, 70, of Kronenwetter, Wisconsin passed away September 18, 2017 at her home. Her loving family surrounded her. Peggie was born June 28, 1947 in Chicago, IL to Frederick and Lucille (Vogt) Post, III who both preceded her in death. She married Thomas "Tuck" Mallery on May 17, 1969. Together they shared 48 years of marriage. Peggie was a graduate of Wausau High School in 1965, received a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1969, and a Master's Degree in Psychology from the University of Wyoming in 1973. In 1975 she and Tuck purchased Trails End along the Wisconsin River, between Wausau and Mosinee, this is the same home in which she passed peacefully. Peggie was first and foremost a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. Peggie's children remember her for the never-ending love and support she provided. Her grandchildren appreciate how she made spending quality time with them her principle priority. Peggie's indomitable spirit was a force - contagious to many. She understood well the power of the mind and what a person could achieve if they believed in themselves. She was graceful and calm under pressure. She possessed great strength and determination. When asked recently what she was most proud of in her list of life's accomplishments she responded her 48-year marriage to Tuck and the raising of her two children, Ryan and Tess. Peggie was very much a self-starter and her working career spanned approximately three decades. During the 1970's and 1980's she taught Psychology at the North Central Technical College. She also led seminars on Assertiveness during this time; spawned out of the Wellness movement of the early 1970s, enforcing the notion that an individual only be responsible for their own thoughts and behaviors - not another's. She taught that an individual has choices on how they respond to any behavior, with a particular focus on antagonizing and abusive behavior. Often seminar attendees were women experiencing some form of abuse at home or in the workplace. In the late 80s she founded WOFM radio station in Wausau, Wisconsin and ran it until it was sold in the late 1990s. She also operated and then sold an oil distribution company during this time. In retirement, she worked alongside her husband Tuck serving as what might best be referred to as CFO for the family holding company. She always handled the bookkeeping herself, a skill she learned from her mother Lu. Peggie's hobbies and interests were far and wide. She was not afraid to try new things. She enjoyed being a pioneer in women's athletics. She was an avid skier (both alpine and cross country) and skied 10 American Birkebeiner races; the first was its third running in 1975. She was among other things a jogger, biker, bird hunter, naturalist, canoeist, backpacker, and cyclist. Some of the things she had a strong appreciation for include: a good novel, humility, positive attitudes, laughter, a cheeseburger paired with a crisp lager, good bird dogs, brussel sprouts, conservation, land management, straight shooting (both literal and figurative), skiing from the top, the Olympic Games, humility, inquisitive minds, rhubarb pie, a tough challenge, western native prairie, new shoes, big white pines, good style, any kind of owl, a well planned ski line, vibrant colors, single malt scotch (on the rocks), spring peepers, trillium flowers, ruffed grouse, pink and white lady's slipper, #8 shot for woodcock, kick wax appropriately matched to the conditions, cowboy boots, fur coats, the original McDonalds french fries ("they did something to the new ones"), powder days, active people and a grandchild's big hug. Peggie loved the outdoors in large part for the tranquility and serenity they provided. She found her temple in the outside world. Communing with nature strengthened her spirit. She had a strong conservation ethic. One of the ways she gave back to her community was through the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin. She began serving on their Board of Directors in 2003. She joined the executive committee in 2004 and served as Treasurer of the organization from 2010-2013. Peggie is survived by her husband Tuck, her sister Sandy (Jack) Goggin, son Ryan (Denise) Mallery, daughter Tess (Matt) Mallery; grandchildren Rigby Post Mallery and Luke and Liza Hankins. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday October 3, 2017 at First Universalist Unitarian Church of Wausau, 504 Grant St, Wausau, WI 54403. A Reception for family and friends will follow the service at the Wausau Country Club, 208 Country Club Road, Schofield, Wisconsin 54476. A lunch buffet will be provided. People are invited to bring a story to share about Peggie to the reception. In lieu of flowers, Peggie requested that memorials be directed to the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin.
