Rose Stevens

August 10, 1929 — December 21, 2017

Rose Marie Leland was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin on August 10th, 1929 to Harold and Julia (Porter) Leland. Both the Leland and Porter families were early settlers near Eau Claire. Rose Marie was surrounded by cousins until 1938 when her father moved the family to Wausau. Their home at 1426 Grand Avenue was the original Miller homestead. Rose Marie had two brothers, Harold Robert and Thomas Porter, both of whom preceded her in death. In 1951 she married Warren Gene Stevens, also of Wausau. He had just graduated from the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. They had three daughters, Ann Marie, Jean Carol (John Greenwood), and Patricia Lynn (Thomas Rutka). Rose Marie was a Navy wife and took full advantage of each area of the world to which Warren's long Navy career took them. In retirement they returned to the Wausau area, living on the banks of the Wisconsin River just north of Mosinee and then on Tug Lake north of Merrill. Rose Marie enjoyed reading and writing, swimming and biking, and her grandchildren, Will and Mary Smiley, Molly Greenwood, and Sam Rutka. Memorials may be sent to the First Universalist Unitarian Church of Wausau at 504 Grant Street, Wausau, WI, 54403.
