Velda E. Johnson "Dolly", age 93, of Woodruff, formerly of Wausau, passed away on December 1, 2024 at Milestone Senior Living in Woodruff.
Velda was born on January 24, 1931 in Brokaw, Wisconsin to Elmer and Dora Gustavson. She graduated from Wausau High School. Velda married Floyd J. Johnson of Merrill on October 2, 1950.
While her son and daughter were in elementary School, Velda served for years as a dedicated Girl Scout Troop Leader and a Cub Scout Den Mother; she regularly volunteered as a Grant Elementary School "room mother", assisting the classroom teachers with special events, fundraisers, and fieldtrips. When her children were in middle school, she returned to work at Hoffer's Glass of Wausau as a data processor.
Velda was a long-time member of Wesley Methodist Church in Wausau. She was an active member of the Shrine Auxiliary at the Wausau Masonic Lodge, YWCA and the YWCA Antique Study Club. Velda greatly enjoyed playing bridge with her circle of friends. She was a huge dog lover and owned three different miniature schnauzers over her lifetime.
After retirement from Hoffer's Glass; Velda and Floyd spent 18 years as antique dealers. She enjoyed finding beautiful antique glassware, china, and ceramic pieces for their shop in Merrill's Antique Mall.
Velda and Floyd enjoyed golfing and taking pontoon boat rides with family and friends at the family cottage on Bear Lake in Hazelhurst, Wisconsin and winter trips to Inverness, Florida. To celebrate their 50th anniversary, they celebrated in Hawaii.
She is survived by her children Ron Johnson, of Wausau and Sally (Mike) Young, of Chippewa Falls; granddaughter Dorie (Dr. Adam) Klassen of Oak Harbor, WA. She is further survived by other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Floyd and sister Ramona White.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials in Velda's name may be sent to Shriner's Children's Hospital-Twin Cities (www.shrinerschildrens.org/en/locations/twin-cities) or Marathon County Humane Society (catsndogs.org/make-a-donation/).
